Chapter 24: Another Lead
Saturday, 1:00 PM
Shane hung up the phone and rubbed his face.
âWho was that?â Carl asked.
âCaptain Thompson. Heâs almost here.â
âHow is Jack?â Carl inquired.
Shane shook his head, chuckling. âJack? My, arenât we familiar.â
âUnlike you, my young friend, I have no great qualms about being polite.â
âItâs not a matter of being polite,â Shane replied. âItâs a matter of you being dead. Dead people donât get to be on a first-name basis with living people.â
âRude, Shane.â
âOccasionally,â Shane chuckled.
âTell me, what did he have to say?â Carl asked, taking a seat across from Shane.
âIt seems,â Shane began, âthat the sunglasses may have made their way to the Laton Hotel here in Nashua.â
Carl frowned with revulsion. âIs the establishment any better now than it was in my time?â
âNope.â
The dead man shook his head.
âAnyway, turns out that the attendant for the morgue who had the sunglasses before and had been burgled had registered his game system, and that game system was one of the items stolen out of his apartment after his death,â Shane explained. âA system was found at the Laton Hotel in the room of a junkie who happened to tumble out of his third-story window while fighting with another resident. Solid detective skills say the junkie was the one to take the system and the glasses.â
âWere the glasses there?â
Shane shook his head. âNope. No such luck. However, a gentleman in a suit was reported wandering into the Laton, and then exiting a short time later.â
âAnd was anyone able to identify him?â Carl asked, hopefully.
âOf course not,â Shane laughed.
âYou seem to be in a surprisingly good mood,â Carl stated, narrowing his eyes. âWere you drinking?â
âNo,â Shane answered. âSo, it gets better. Thursday, a man was shot to death by his wife, who then died of unknown reasons in her kitchen.â
âHow is that better?â Carl asked.
âJack found out that this newest dead man, Zeke something-or-other, was a regular of the Dunkin Donuts on Canal Street across from the Laton Hotel. Not only that, but he got the shop to let him peek at the video footage, and thereâs Zeke going into the Laton Hotel. So, this evening, Jackâs going to come down, and he and I are going to Zekeâs house to see if we canât find the damned sunglasses.â
âAnd what about your trip to Connecticut?â Carl asked. âMaster Victor and Tom, they are well?â
âAs well as can be expected,â Shane replied. âI did get some information from Warren Thorne, so Iâll be acting on that in the next day or two.â
Carl raised an eyebrow and waited for Shane to continue.
âI have a name,â Shane told the dead man. âSomeone in Manchester, no less. Iâll be having a chat with him.â
Carl frowned. âA chat? Why? I thought you were going to execute him when you found him.â
âOh, yeah, thatâll happen,â Shane confirmed. âAccording to Warren, this guy, Marty Feldman, heâs working for someone else. I want to know who it is. Whoâs trying to get their hands on all these items, and I want to know why.
